Mixed SATB choir, vocal quartet; 8 minutes
This
work takes its atmosphere from the text: It was dark. It is scored for
a mixed choir and a vocal quartet which should be separated from the
main choir. If performed in a church, the quartet should be located in
the choir loft, above and behind the audience. The voices of the
quartet represent the voices of heaven. Absent at first, as death
nears, they play a larger roll and eventually finish the composition.
Premiered October 22, 2000 at Walter Hall, University of Toronto. |

Tenebræ factæ sunt
Et circa horam nonam exclamavit Jesus voca magna:
Deus meus, ut quid me dereliqusti?
Et inclanato capite, Emisit spiritum.
It was dark
And about the ninth hour Jesus cried out in a loud voice:
My God, why have you abandoned me?
And he bowed his head And gave up his spirit.
